With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a long life well lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Maria Kalicinsky on July 6, 2026, just before her 100th birthday.
Born in Nemyriv, Ukraine and raised in Drohobych, Maria was displaced by the Second World War and found refuge in a displaced persons camp in Bavaria, where she married Omelan in 1945. They immigrated to Canada in 1948, settling in Valley River, Manitoba before moving to Winnipeg, where they raised their four children.
A devoted parishioner of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral, Maria lived her faith through service to others, caring for her mother, sister and husband. She treasured hosting Sviat Vechir for her growing family, a tradition she continued until 2023.
Maria leaves behind her children Lesia (Victor Hetmanczuk), Ihor, George (Christina) and Chrystyna (Evhen); grandchildren Taras (Laryssa), Mark (Diane), Alex (Emily), Vera (Bryan), Alia (Paul), Natalia (Lesyk), Eva (Patrick) and Nadia; great-grandchildren Maksym, Nicholas, Luka, Maya, Matthew, Caroline, Charles, Harrison, Paige and Hailey. She was predeceased by her husband Omelan, grandson Peter, daughter-in-law Roma and six siblings.
Funeral service and prayers on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral, 115 McGregor Street, Winnipeg, Rev. I. Shved officiating. The family thanks Dr. T. Babick, the staff of River Ridge Retirement Residence and St. Boniface Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canada Ukraine Foundation (www.cufoundation.ca) or the Cathedral Parish (www.stvo.ca).
